2. Chithram

Chithram is a comedy film from the 1980s that captured the hearts of many. The story speaks of a young woman, Kalyani, who proposes to marry against her father’s wishes. Knowing that she will be disinherited, her boyfriend ditches her. Now, Kalyani finds another man and must convince him to playact the part of her boyfriend since her father is ill. Things are going well until Kalyani actually falls in love with the pretender. 

3. Thoovanathumbikal

Translated as “Dragonflies in the Gentle Rain”, Thoovanathumbikal is an 80s romantic drama made by P. Padmarajan. The film revolves around a man played by Mohanlal, who is torn between two women: Radha, a distant relative, and Clara, an escort. The film is considered one of the best love story movies in Malayalam and in India for its depiction of love and rain. Rain is considered a character in the film since it shows up whenever the characters meet.  

4. Namukku Parkkan Munthirithoppukal

Another beautiful and sensual love story directed by P. Padmarajan, “Vineyards for us to dwell in” is a reimagining of the Song of Songs written by King Solomon. The story follows a Malayali Syrian Christian-Nasrani family and tells the story of unconditional love that the male character Solomon has for Sofia, a young girl raped by her stepfather. 

5. Ohm Shanthi Oshaana

Ohm Shanthi Oshaana follows Pooja, born in 1983 and introduced as a spirited, tomboyish teenager in 1999, who decides she will only marry for love. After a brief crush on a schoolboy, she becomes infatuated with Giri, a former college senior who once rescued her from harassers. Although he initially rejects her, Pooja persists through the years while focusing on her studies and becoming a doctor. Eventually, Giri realizes he loves her too, and they marry. In the present, they are happily raising their daughter.

6. Thattathin Marayathu

This film is among the best romantic Malayalam movies of the modern generation. It tells the story of an interfaith love story between a young man by the name of Vinodh and a Muslim woman by the name of Aisha. It became one of the most famous interfaith love stories in Malayalam cinema.  

7. Ennu Ninte Moideen

A tragic love story, Yours Truly, Moideen, tells the story of a real-life interfaith love affair between Kanchanamala and B. P. Moideen from the 1960s. It’s a tragic story because one is a Muslim and the other is from an affluent Hindu family, and their love story is doomed from the start.   

8. Hridayam

Hridayam is a 2022 Indian Malayalam-language coming-of-age romantic drama film written and directed by Vineeth Sreenivasan. It stars Pranav Mohanlal, Kalyani Priyadarshan, and Darshana Rajendran, with music by Hesham Abdul Wahab. The story follows Arun Neelakandan’s journey from college life to adulthood, exploring his friendships, relationships, mistakes, and personal growth. Produced by Merryland Cinemas, it marked the studio’s return and reintroduced audio cassettes and vinyl records in India. Released on 21 January 2022, the film received positive reviews, became one of the year’s highest-grossing Malayalam films, and won Kerala State Film Awards for Best Film with Popular Appeal and Best Music.

9. Charlie

Charlie can’t really qualify as a romantic film, but it is a beautiful story of a man who tries his best to be a kind-hearted saviour to others. His story is discovered by a young graphic artist by the name of Tessa, who unravels the story of the strange Charlie played by Dulqueer Salmaan.  

10. Premalu 

Premalu is a 2024 Indian Malayalam-language romantic comedy film directed by Girish A. D. and written by him with Kiran Josey. Produced by Bhavana Studios, Fahadh Faasil and Friends, and Working Class Hero, it stars Naslen and Mamitha Baiju among a supporting cast. 

The story follows Sachin Santhosh, a Kerala graduate who, after planning to move to the UK, goes to Hyderabad for a GATE course and falls in love with IT employee Reenu Roy. 

Released on 9 February 2024, it received critical acclaim for its performances, script, soundtrack, and humor, becoming one of the highest-grossing Malayalam films of the year. A sequel is in development.
